Food Safety Software for Restaurants: FoodDocs vs SmartSense vs Ladle vs Mitti
By the HospitalityStack editors · written from hotel & resort F&B experience
What this software replaces
Paper temperature logs, opening and closing checklists, and HACCP binders that nobody updates. Every tool here aims to turn those into tasks on a phone or tablet with a timestamp, so you have proof of compliance at inspection time. The main difference is whether a vendor leads with software checklists and HACCP plans or with wireless temperature sensors.
FoodDocs: published per-site pricing
FoodDocs lists three plans per site per month (checked Oct 2026): Lite $99 ($79 billed annually) for digital monitoring tasks and corrective actions, Standard $199 ($167 annually), which adds a HACCP plan builder, automatically created SOPs, a monitoring app, a digital recipe book and an allergen overview, and Professional $299 ($250 annually), which adds traceability and recall data for central kitchens. Enterprise is custom-priced. Every plan has unlimited users and a free 14-day trial with no credit card, and FoodDocs says you can cancel any time.
Mitti (by SafetyCulture): free tier and per-seat pricing
Mitti is SafetyCulture's frontline operations app for inspections and checklists, and it isn't food-specific. Its pricing page (checked Oct 2026) lists Free at $0 for teams of up to 10, with 5 active inspection templates. Premium is $29 per seat per month, or $24 billed annually, with unlimited templates, advanced analytics, permissions and integrations. Enterprise is custom-priced, and there's also location-based pricing for multi-site operators. Count your seats: per-seat pricing gets expensive with a big kitchen team.
Ladle (ComplianceMate): sensors plus checklists, quote only
Ladle's ComplianceMate offers automated HACCP workflow checklists and wireless temperature sensors with real-time alerts on mobile and desktop. Ladle says the sensors work through stainless steel, insulation and concrete, and that you can see data across all locations. We found no public price list (Oct 2026), so ask for a quote that includes sensor hardware. Ladle also sells AuditApp, which has a free 14-day trial.
SmartSense (formerly Jolt): monitoring-first, quote only
Jolt is now part of SmartSense by Digi. It covers food safety monitoring, digital checklists, probes, wireless sensors and labeling, and it sells to food service, grocery and healthcare. SmartSense describes it as sensing-as-a-service. There's no public pricing (its /pricing page returned 404 in Oct 2026), so request a quote through its contact page.
How to choose
Single restaurant, mostly paperwork: start with Mitti's free tier or a FoodDocs trial. You want a HACCP plan written for you: FoodDocs Standard. Walk-ins and reach-ins you want watched 24/7: get quotes from ComplianceMate and SmartSense, and ask about hardware cost, install, cellular vs Wi-Fi, and alert escalation. Whatever you buy, check with your local health department that digital logs are accepted.
