Best POS for Food Trucks (2026): Square vs Toast vs Clover, Prices Checked

By the HospitalityStack editors · written from hotel & resort F&B experience

The short answer

For most new or one-truck operations, Square is the easiest start: a $0/month plan, a published card rate and no contract. Toast fits trucks that want restaurant-grade hardware with cellular handhelds and plan to add payroll, catering and loyalty from one vendor. Clover fits owners who want a compact all-in-one device with a published bundle price and card rate, and are fine with a 36-month hardware subscription. Prices below were read on each vendor's official pages (checked Oct 2026).

What a food truck needs from a POS

Offline payments: you will lose signal at festivals and in parking lots. Check how long offline payments can wait and who carries the risk if a card declines later.

Cellular or a backup connection: a handheld with cellular or a router with cellular backup keeps orders flowing.

Handhelds for line busting: taking orders down the line shortens the wait at the window.

QR and online ordering with order-ready texts: guests order ahead and you stop shouting names.

Compact hardware with a built-in printer and a fast menu with modifiers.

Catering tools: invoices and deposits for private events.

Total cost at your card volume: on a busy truck the card rate costs more than the software, so compare both.

Square: $0 to $149 a month, published card rates

Square lists Free $0, Plus $49 and Premium $149 per location per month. In-person card rates are 2.6% + 15¢ (Free), 2.5% + 15¢ (Plus) and 2.4% + 15¢ (Premium); manually keyed or card-on-file payments are 3.5% + 15¢. Offline payments are included on every plan, but they are declined if the device doesn't reconnect within 24 hours of the first offline payment, and the seller carries the risk of declines. Tap to Pay on iPhone and Android takes cards with no extra hardware, and Square hardware starts at $59. Add-ons: Square KDS app $30/device (Plus) or $20 (Premium); Square Kiosk $99/device. Plus and Premium have a 30-day free trial and you can cancel or switch plans anytime. Phone support is 6am–6pm PT on weekdays (first 90 days only on Free), and 24/7 on Premium. The food truck page also lists free invoices for catering (processing fee when paid), commission-free pickup and delivery ordering, and DoorDash and Uber Eats integrations (all checked Oct 2026).

Toast: $0 Starter Kit or $69 a month, quote-based card rate

Toast lists a Starter Kit from $0/month for single-location restaurants with 1–2 terminals (Toast Flex terminal, Toast Tap card reader and router, hardware kit with no upfront cost) and Point of Sale from $69/month with your choice of hardware. Payments use a flat rate that isn't published on the pricing page, so get it in writing. Toast's food truck page highlights Toast Go 3 handhelds with cellular connectivity, QR ordering, SMS order-ready alerts, commission-free online ordering, and offline mode for orders, tickets and card payments. Hardware can be paid upfront or through Pay Later, a daily percentage of sales over 180 days. Toast runs only on approved Toast hardware, and 24/7 Toast Care is included with every subscription (checked Oct 2026).

Clover: $135 a month for 36 months, or buy the device

Clover's quick-service Starter bundle (Mini 8" touchscreen with a built-in receipt printer, Restaurant Growth software) is $135/month for 36 months, or $849 + $89.95/month. Card rates are 2.3% + 10¢ tapped, swiped or inserted and 3.5% + 10¢ typed in. The bundle includes QR-code ordering, no-fee online ordering and third-party menu integrations; Rapid Deposit (funds within minutes) costs 1.75%. Clover says these prices are only available on Clover.com, and its pricing FAQ says hardware subscriptions can't be canceled (they can be paid off, upgraded or bought out), so read the terms first (checked Oct 2026).

Which fits your truck

Testing a concept, seasonal or one truck: start on Square Free or Plus; nothing to cancel if the season ends. Busy truck with a line and a second person: compare Toast (Go 3 handheld with cellular) and Square Handheld or Plus with KDS, and get Toast's card rate in writing. One compact device with a known monthly price: Clover's Starter bundle, if a 36-month commitment works for you. Whatever you pick, check how offline payments work before your first festival.
