Best POS for Coffee Shops (2026): Square vs Toast vs Clover vs Lightspeed, Prices Checked

By the HospitalityStack editors · written from hotel & resort F&B experience

The short answer

For a new or single-counter cafe, Square is the easiest start: a $0/month plan, a published card rate and no contract, with loyalty included once you move to Plus ($49/month). Toast fits busy cafes that want restaurant-grade terminals, a kitchen display, kiosks and order-ready boards from one vendor, but its card rate isn't published. Clover fits owners who want one known monthly price for hardware and software ($135 to $245/month for 36 months) plus a published 2.3% + 10¢ card rate, and are fine with a subscription that can't be canceled. Lightspeed Restaurant publishes software prices from $69 but no card rate. Prices below were read on each vendor's official pages (checked Oct 2026).

What a coffee shop needs from a POS

Fast drink modifiers: milk swaps, extra shots and syrups should take a tap or two, not a menu hunt.

Line speed at the morning rush: a customer-facing screen, self-order kiosks, handhelds for line busting, and order-ready texts or boards so you stop calling names.

Mobile and online ordering for pickup, ideally without a per-order commission.

Loyalty for regulars: check whether it's included in the plan you pick or sold as an add-on.

Tipping on a guest-facing screen with suggested amounts you control.

Offline mode: how long offline card payments can wait, and who carries the risk if a card is declined later.

Retail on the same system if you sell beans, mugs or merch.

Total cost at your ticket size: cafes run many small card sales, so the fixed part of the card fee matters. Example math on a $6 card sale: 2.6% + 15¢ is about 31¢, while 2.3% + 10¢ is about 24¢. Add the monthly software and hardware cost before you compare.

Square: $0 to $149 a month, published card rates

Square lists Free $0, Plus $49 and Premium $149 per location per month. In-person card rates are 2.6% + 15¢ (Free), 2.5% + 15¢ (Plus) and 2.4% + 15¢ (Premium); manually keyed or card-on-file payments are 3.5% + 15¢, and online payments are 3.3% + 30¢ on Free and 2.9% + 30¢ on Plus and Premium. Plus adds a loyalty rewards program and email marketing (the first 500 texts free, then 3¢ per text). The Square KDS app costs $30/device per month on Plus or $20 on Premium, and Square Kiosk software is $99/device per month (Kiosk Lite on iPad: $50 on Plus, $30 on Premium); neither is available on Free. Order-ready texts go out when an order is marked complete in KDS. Every plan includes a branded online ordering page with pickup and local delivery, and Square's coffee shop page says online pickup and delivery are commission-free. Offline payments are included on every plan, but they are declined if the device doesn't reconnect within 24 hours of the first offline payment, and the seller carries the risk of declines. Hardware: Square Reader $59, Square Stand (iPad POS) $149, Square Terminal $299, Square Handheld $399, Square Register $899 and Square Kiosk $1,999 with a counter stand; Tap to Pay on iPhone and Android takes cards with no extra hardware. Plus and Premium have a 30-day free trial and you can cancel or switch plans anytime. Businesses processing over $250,000 a year can ask about custom pricing. Phone support is 6am–6pm PT on weekdays (first 90 days only on Free) and 24/7 on Premium (checked Oct 2026).

Toast: $0 Starter Kit or $69 a month, quote-based card rate

Toast lists a Starter Kit from $0/month for single-location restaurants that need 1–2 terminals (hardware kit with no upfront cost) and Point of Sale from $69/month, a monthly software subscription with your choice of hardware and flat-rate processing; a Build Your Own plan is custom-priced. The footnotes say these prices apply to new customers and single locations only, and include the first hardware terminal subscription, with extra charges for more devices. Toast describes its processing as a simple flat rate but doesn't publish the number, so get it in writing. Upfront hardware and installation costs vary, and the Starter Package also offers a Pay-as-You-Go plan with an all-in-one platform rate (not published). Toast runs only on approved Toast hardware, and 24/7 Toast Care is included with every subscription. Offline mode keeps orders, tickets, receipts and card payments going until you're back online. Toast's cafe and bakery page highlights Open View ordering for drinks with several modifiers, a kitchen display for drinks and food, kiosks, Toast Mobile Order & Pay, order-ready boards, an integrated loyalty program, Toast Retail for beans and mugs on the same device, and a guest-facing display for tipping. Loyalty sits in Toast's Marketing Suite (email marketing, loyalty and gift cards), so ask for its price in your quote (checked Oct 2026).

Clover: $135 to $245 a month for 36 months

Clover's quick-service bundles (the same three are on its coffee shop page) all run on the Restaurant Growth software plan: Starter (Mini 8" touchscreen with a built-in receipt printer) $135/month for 36 months or $849 + $89.95/month; Standard (Station Duo with a 14" merchant screen and an 8" customer screen, cash drawer and printer) $185/month for 36 months or $1,899 + $89.95/month; Advanced (Station Duo plus a Flex handheld) $245/month for 36 months or $2,648 + $109.90/month. Card rates are 2.3% + 10¢ tapped, swiped or inserted and 3.5% + 10¢ typed in. Clover's comparison table lists item modifiers, QR-code ordering and no-fee online ordering in all three bundles, but the loyalty program, promotions and gift cards only in Standard and Advanced (not Starter), and line busting only in Advanced. The coffee shop page points to the Station Duo customer screen to keep the line moving, modifiers for complex coffee orders, inventory alerts for beans, cups and lids, and configurable tip suggestions. Clover's help center says devices can take offline payments for up to 7 days when the option is on, and the merchant accepts the risk of a later decline. Rapid Deposit (funds within minutes) costs 1.75%. Clover says these prices are only available on Clover.com, and its pricing FAQ says subscriptions can't be canceled or refunded (they can be paid off, upgraded or bought out), so read the terms first (checked Oct 2026).

Lightspeed Restaurant: published software prices, quote-based card rate

Lightspeed's restaurant pricing page lists Starter 69, Essential 189 and Premium 399 (USD), plus a custom-quoted Enterprise tier. The page shows no billing term next to those figures, so confirm whether the price is monthly or billed annually. The Kitchen Display System is $30 per screen per month, and the page notes that prices may vary by business type and industry. The card processing rate is not published (quote only). The plans list menu setup with product options and modifiers, offline mode, 24/7 support, online ordering, and order-and-pay-at-table with QR ordering (also sold as an add-on) (checked Oct 2026).

Which fits your cafe

New cafe or one register: start on Square Free, and move to Plus when you want loyalty and a KDS; there's nothing to cancel if plans change. Busy cafe with a morning line, mobile orders and a drink station screen: compare Toast with Square Plus plus KDS and Kiosk, and get Toast's card rate in writing. One known monthly price that includes hardware: Clover's Standard bundle gives you the customer-facing Station Duo and loyalty (Starter doesn't include loyalty), if a 36-month subscription that can't be canceled works for you. Already talking to Lightspeed: get the card rate and billing term in writing. Whatever you pick, run your real numbers: average ticket × monthly card sales × the card rate, plus software and hardware. More head-to-heads: Toast vs Square, Square vs Clover and Toast vs Clover.

FAQ

What is the cheapest POS for a coffee shop?

Square Free is the only plan here with $0/month software and a published card rate (2.6% + 15¢ in person). Toast's Starter Kit is also $0/month, but its card rate isn't published, so your total depends on the quote (checked Oct 2026).

Which coffee shop POS includes loyalty?

Square includes a loyalty rewards program on Plus ($49/month per location), not on Free. Clover lists its loyalty program in the Standard ($185/month for 36 months) and Advanced bundles, not in Starter. Toast sells loyalty in its Marketing Suite, so ask for the price in your quote (checked Oct 2026).

Can a cafe POS keep taking cards when the Wi-Fi drops?

Yes, with limits. Square's offline payments are declined if the device doesn't reconnect within 24 hours of the first offline payment. Clover devices can take offline payments for up to 7 days when the option is on. Toast's offline mode keeps orders and card payments going until you reconnect. Square and Clover both say the business carries the risk if an offline card is declined later.

Which card rate is lowest for small coffee tickets?

Of the published in-person rates, Clover's 2.3% + 10¢ is lower than Square's 2.4% to 2.6% + 15¢: on a $6 card sale that is about 24¢ with Clover versus about 31¢ on Square Free. Clover's bundles cost $135 to $245 a month for 36 months, though, so compare the total monthly cost. Toast and Lightspeed don't publish their card rates.

Do coffee shop POS systems require a contract?

Square has no contract: Plus and Premium can be canceled or switched anytime. Clover's hardware subscriptions run for 36 months and can't be canceled (you can pay them off, upgrade or buy out). Toast's and Lightspeed's pricing pages don't state a term, so read the agreement before you sign.
